The role of Islamic education in strengthening tolerance and peace in a multicultural society

This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic education in addressing multicultural societies. A multicultural society is a community capable of accepting and respecting diversity in terms of ethnicity, religion, culture, gender, language, customs, and regional origins. Multiculturalism allows these differences to coexist harmoniously with mutual respect. Religious values that support moderation in faith include efforts to safeguard human life, respect noble civilization, strengthen principles of moderation, foster peace, and uphold pluralism by respecting freedom of thought, expression, and religion. Islamic education aims to produce individuals who are righteous both personally and socially, emphasizing values of justice, peace, equality, and humanity in line with the concept of "rahmatan lil alamin." Thus, Islamic education explicitly supports appreciation for diversity and multiculturalism, as taught in the Qur'an and Hadith
